For anyone who is thinking of getting a free .co.uk domain through GBBO I can tell you that it is now a sham. When GBBO was first introduced, it was run by Google and BT and gave any business that needed a uk domain one for FREE. You simply signed up your business name, details ect and then google contacted you with a phone call to verify you where who you say you are then you simply registered "yourdomainname".co.uk and it was yours for free. It was fair to say that you were limited to the types of webpage templates and abilities to use, but never the less, you now OWNED yourdomainname.co.uk for everyone on the web to see. Unfortunately, not long back, Google and BT sold off GBBO to a South African company called YOLA. Everything went well at the start and british businesses continued to own their own .co.uk names.
However, looks like YOLA got extra greedy and now, even though they still advertise a free .co.uk domain name on the GBBO website, you do not get one!!! You now have to PAY to upgrade your FREE account to get a .co.uk domain name. You will still get a free website with "yourdomainname".yola.com with the free account but this is not the advertised FREE .co.uk DOMAIN NAME advertised!!! Surely this practice is unlawfull if not immorral. I suggest to EVERYONE to now avoid this sham and not fill the pockets of another large greedy corporation!0 -
I'm sorry but you've obviously not gone into the details that thoroughly.
GBBO websites with Yola offer free .co.uk domains plus access to templates you need to build a website totally for free. You can upgrade to a silver account through the GBBO scheme for an extra £4.95. After a year Yola will charge £17.95 for the service. Hardly a scam or a rip-off.
If you wish to take the sole Yola route then expect to pay for a .co.uk etc domain name plus their services. If you wish to acquire a sub-domain .yolasite.com then you can have access to all of Yola's sitebuilding tools and templates for 'free', and therefore have a web presence for free. I know, because I have a 'live' free GBBO website plus 2 'live' websites for free with .yolasite.com subdomains.
The one thing people are complaining about with the GBBO/Yola scheme is that you have to submit credit card details to verify that you are a UK resident. Under the old system you just had to submit mobile phone details. Yola have suggested that if you are concerned about this then you could submit details for a prepaid credit card if you do not wish to submit another card's details. This website has discussed the virtues of prepaid credit cards for many things.
If you just go for a .yolasite.com domain you do not have to submit any kind of credit card details.
I hope that anyone reading this thread who wants a website will check out all the details for themselves. I have no affiliation with Yola - I just use their services which I find are excellent for my particular needs. There's quite a bit of info online regarding the GBBO/Yola scheme.

Yep, most of it being that it's useless!
To sum up, same template as everyone else, loads of limitations.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
do i understand correctly, £17.95 is for ONE year including hosting and domain?
if yest, than that's not a bad deal at all! actually i could not offer anything better myself - an uk domain costs around £6 retail per year, so that leaves you with £12 = one pound per month!
for no-hassle no-sweat quick solution it's ok.
of course, if you need advanced features or actually SELL online then you you willl probably need to look at another hosting [not really sure what exact website building things this Yola offers],
generally in 2011 hosting market you can get a deal from £2-£3 per month upwards (often includes a free domain too).
(how different hostings compare to each other, thats a whole another discussion. feel free to ask;-))0
