Or is it just a security measure which is up to you if you do it or not?

Yes you do!
Not all shops use chip and pin
When you go into your bank, they may use your signaure as an identity check

Or if it stolen someone else will sign it and use it abroad where there is no pin number required and guess what the signature will match.0

its for your protection of your account associated with that card, sometimes a shops till will default and you might need to sign a receipt instead of using the chip and pin, if there is no signature on the card you wont be able to use it to pay0
-
Why would you not sign it, takes a millisecond!:beer:0

Where I work we dont have chip and pin yet, and we get lots of people who no longer sign their cards, we are not allowed to accept them for payment if they are not signed.
We also get people in with someone elses card, who find it difficult to sign as its not their signature!

Signing the card indicates your acceptance of the terms and conditions for the issuance of the card, It isn't valid until you have signed it. Read your bank account's terms and conditions.0

Shops require a signature to process a card refund too.0

I have been asked for a signature in some stores - and they then say "you hav'nt signed your card", to which I reply that it it makes a mockery of "chip & pin"????, I have always offered my driving license to prove - which they have accepted (up to now)0

Its up to you to sign it or not but if you dotn and it goes missing someone else could use it in places that use the signature to pay for stuff. It takes 5 seconds to put your squiggle on it0

I don't understand why it makes a mockery of chip and pin. The two systems run side by side.
Incidentally, if the card isn't signed they are supposed to process as a referral (manual authorisation with basic ID check)0
