I can remember someone in my office (of qualified engineers!) trying a self built some 10 years ago and running into all sorts of incompatibility problems. The rest of us looked on and concluded never to try it ourselves: things which should have worked didn't and as for finding out which bit it was giving the trouble and why.................

Previously on this site other posters have recommended pcspecialists.co.uk as a good UK site to specify your own PC to your specs without the crapware via their product configurator. Not used them myself so cannot comment on how good/bad they are.
