MOT out of date

from an earlier thread......Pretty sure that lack of MOT by itself will not affect insurance, as for the ANPR cameras I managed to forget my MOT last year and ended up driving around for about 6 months without an MOT during which I did the thick end of 10k miles including frequent trips up & down the M1 & M4, multiple trips into central London and two ferry trips to Europe.
I must have passed lots of ANPR cameras but didn’t get pulled once, maybe the MOT isn’t linked in, maybe they don’t bother with such minor offences unless there are more serious offences involved too or maybe I was just lucky0 -

However, you are not legally allowed to drive the car on the road unless you are going to or from a prebooked MOT test, so doing the journey at the weekend could land you in trouble if stopped.
I don't know if the police ANPR camera system is tied in to the MOT database, but if it is then you might well get ticketed.
Yes it is.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
You could perhaps hire a car.
This really is the OP's only viable choice, other than breaking the law; as well as driving a car which hasn't had its roadworthiness inspected for over a year. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Thanks all, really helpful advice. I couldn't hire a car, though maybe a van, as mine is a campervan conversion and I need the space to carry some bulky items. Yes both the repairers (coming up from London, can't get it done locally) and the MOT garage are within 10 miles of home, I'm in the Midlands. That wouldn't be too big a risk, it's just this weekend that's the problem.
It really does totally serve me right and I'll just have to take the chance. So angry with myself!!!
And burtons, I don't see how a damaged rear passenger seatbelt makes the car unroadworthy but I take your point re insurance - you're quite right it would fail the MOT though.
Can you let me know your route and the times you will doing your hundred mile journey? Just so that I (and anyone else who might venture near your route) can make sure I am nowhere near you when you drive on the road. How are your brakes? How is your suspension and steering? How is your structural bodywork holding up? When was the last time you had a proper look under your converted camper van?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Well, it was all fine at the mot this week, so probably better than most that may have been checked last August.
You had your brakes inspected this week, if not maybe the same question applies?0 -
Goodness, I've lived this long with so much innocence. I had no idea these ANPR cameras recorded every number plate and checked them for wrongdoings against a central database. I live in the middle of nowhere and we hardly have roads let alone cameras on them!! Do they really check every one or maybe one in ten or something? If it's every one then that confirms the van plan then, as I will have to go on part of the M1 and might as well send them the £60 in advance!! Thanks
Eliza
To be honest, and I don't condone this, if you avoided motorways you would probably be alright. Its a risk though, and your risk is a £60 fine if you get caught by a police car. Even if you drove on the motorway I wonder if anything would happen. I agree with a previous poster - book a few MOTs and don't show if you are really worried.
I do question the ability of the Police on things like this - I know someone who drove around without insurance for a whole 6 months and only realised it was uninsured when they came to tax their vehicle! They never got caught out, which is slightly worrying really.0 -
(To Flyboy) If you had read my earlier posts you would see that I decided at an early stage in this conversation to borrow/hire a van.
Thank you to everyone for the interesting discussion however, I have learned so much.
Over and out now0 -
