Lot about this on the radio this morning and in some papers.
The official notice from Beko is as follows:
It has come to our attention that in a very small number of incidents, the defrost timer on a certain production range of BEKO frost free refrigeration can fail and overheat. We are seeking to contact owners of these products to carry out a free of charge modification to the defrost timer.
Quality and customer safety and satisfaction is paramount to Beko; all its products are independently tested before being placed on the market and meet all UK and European safety standards. The number of incidents to which these products have been potentially linked is extremely small, nevertheless, as a responsible manufacturer, we have decided to proactively contact the owners of these fridge freezers as we wish to make a free in-home modification to remove any potential risk with this component.
May we take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and to thank you for your time and cooperation.

Amongst the stuff on the radio was the fact that this isn't just a theoretical issue - there have been house fires caused by the faulty fridge freezers.0

Indeed, I wonder if there is a more appropriate section than Techie?
Think I might do a cut and paste elsewhere. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

i've just checked our Fridge Freezer & found that it is one of those deemed at risk.
Went on the Beko website, typed in my address & so on, typed in the model number CDA543FW followed by its serial number & it said " Your product is not affected."
Can't remember where or when we bought it but i do remember it making a loud grinding noise one morning when we got up about six weeks ago. Sounded like someone was trimming a hedge outside except it was our fridge.
Anyway, i unplugged it for half a day & it was okay after that.0 -
The fault is water condensation occurring on a circuit board that wasn't adequately protected, it wont be a mechanical noise if anything I suppose there could be a sizzling noise as the circuit fries and a suspicious smell.
But who sits and watches a fridge (apart from someone on a harsh diet maybe?) so out of all the hours of the day its likely to be unattended and just catch fire.
Its VITAL to have a tested smoke alarm nearby until Beko have fixed your fridge if its one of the affected ones.European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -

Spookily, last summer, we kept hearing 'odd' noises in the middle of the night, thinking it was one of the kids sneakily putting their TV on, it wasn't until a few days later, and sneaking downstairs, did we realise it was the fridge freezer!"Hope for the Best
Prepare for the worst"0 -
Mine sighs and groans deeply, sounding positively orgasmic at times!Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0

I wouldn't take the risk, if i had one and it was on the list i would be outside the back come rain wind or shine! Regardless of what their website states.
Not worth the risk of having your house burnt to the ground or even worse loosing your children as they sleep in the middle of the night!0 -

Had exactly the same problem. I'd put too much food in the fast freeze compartment and had pushed the back of the compartment against the fan. It's someone else's fault.0
