Can you have wireless without broadband?

Just wondering if there is any way you can connect wirelessly on a dial up line? Not ideal I know but with a laptop rather than being tied to a wire?

Yes, possible as already stated, but it would seem agonisingly slow, as any non-broadband connection now appears.

    Thanks for that

It would just be for one computer, and for away from home in frequent use, I realise it will probably drive me nuts, but it should be no slower than the wired version surely? It would then allow me to sit in comfort while waiting for my mails/web pages to load.

I have a BT Broadband Modem (Intel Anypoint DSL 3240), which I don't use as I have a Wireless modem/router at home, and a Dell Wireless 2350 BB Router model: WRTA-108GD spare. Is there a chance that they will do the trick?

  • Neither will work with 56k connection as they're both for use with ADSL. If you want to use a 56k connection wirelessly then you will need to invest in something like this http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~46076~/product.htm?affiliate=2222 which relies on bluetooth technology as opposed to IEEE 802.11.

Cheaper to invest in a length of modem cable.

Networking a dial up connection is possible, a good few years ago a company wouldnt pay for ISDN so we installed a dialup router for them 5 pc's shareing a dialup was painfully slow but if you dont want to pay for BB then thats all you will get. you should take in to the account the cost of dial up and see if it is worth getting BB.

you will need a dialup router, Wireless access point to make the network wireless and a wifi card.
your current wireless router will be able to be used as an access point.

Your posts are slightly confusing, I think you are saying you have wireless BB at home but want to be able to use wireless while out and about. the best way is to subscribe to bt openzone and make use of their service, if that isnt available in the location but a phone line is just by an extention cable it cant be that often you will use it or do you live in a hotel during the week or somthing? to make the wireless dial up possible while your out and about you will need tt carry the kit arround with you and it would be a pain the other thing hotel phones usualy work on a credit card system you wouldnt realy be able to use a dialup router in that type of system

Thank you all for your help.

The out and about is ia house in Spain, and holiday use only, if spending more time there, would certainly invest in BBand. The telephone point and the seating area are at opposite sides, so means either perching on the same side, or risking someone falling over the wire. Looks like it was a nice thought but not really practical.

On the assumption that you're going to visit Spain fairly often, and only want to pick up your emails have a look at Vodafones 3G service.

My sister uses her (contract) account to surf if her home connection goes tonto, and it's Ok. I think you can use it on PAYG (although that's less common in Spain than it is here).

    Worth checking though.

    Yes he was.

It also means stupid in Spanish.

For some reason one of the Spanish girls I work with says "Tontito" every time I walk past :D
