Propagating a website.

I set-up a website with a hosting company. They told me the site would be viewable within 48 hours due to the time it takes to propagate the site IPAddress across all the DNS servers.
After 4 days, I still couldn't get the site to appear in my browser, so contacted the hosting co. who told me I needed to set my DNS settings to point to GoogleDNS as this would speed-up the progress.
Being that I am not the one hosting the site, ow would pointing my dns settings to google help get my site 'out there' ?.

Sounds a long time, the first time that mine went live, 123reg suggested it would be up to 24 hrs. It was probably around 12hrs.
It's hosted by me, and when I changed from VM to O2, the adjusted ip address was updated within a couple of hours.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Just got an email from my hosting co., apparrently the Italians did not like my phone number, so rejected the registration. I have given them my mobile no. lets see what they do with that.Never Knowingly Understood.
