Modem off or Modem on - when not using PC

Hi
Ive never worked out whether or not I should I leave my BroadBand modem on all the time or is it fine to switch it off?
We keep hearing about how we should be saving electricity by switching plugs off etc but Im not sure where I stand with my modem - does it need to remain on? Does switching it off mess the settings up?

LOL I hope none of my friends gets a 'surge':eek: I always turn our modem off when the pcs are shut down.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Do these "surges" apply to cable too?
BTW I always switch my modem off when not in use!0
