Bought some good quality fascia board, two coats of white primer, dried it, tried to top coat with exterior gloss tonight (said it was self under coating).... B+Q Exterior paint.load of craters/hollows in paint finish (good quality brush), tried excessive feathering -craters kept re appearing. Ended up taking off coat with white spirit. What answer now. Obviously sand back to primer- but what will stop this happening next time?? do I need undercoat Help !

Sorry to hear of your problems mate but I'm a Dulux man thru and thru.
Ok it costs more , but in my opinion you pay for what you get.
I'm not saying that the exterior paint you got isn't any good , but some of their stuff has the consistency of skimmed milk !

did it have an orange peel effect ? if so http://www.dulux.co.uk/advice/questions/faq/faq_026.jsp

i would personally use dulux u/c and gloss , give it a light sand with fine grade paper between coats

Did you use knotting appropriately first?

Did you use a water based primer? Was it fully dry?

You've also found that Bargain and Quick self undercoating gloss isn't. Throw it away and follow nickj's advice.

    Cheers

There is no such thing as self undercoating gloss - regardless of what it says on the tin. There is only one way to do a job and that is properly. Knotted, primed, 2 coats of oil based undercoat and a top coat. All branded - dulux, crown macphersons, johnstones. Not shops own brand.

Remember if the professionals don't use it, then its not worth using.

Was the gloss paint water based?

I had a similar issue with Crown eggshell 4 years back. Just could not get it smooth despite all the prep and feathering. Crown, to their credit refunded the cost of the paint, but I moved to Dulux since and stayed with them. Ironic in that Akzo Nobel who owned them, now own Dulux instead.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)
