Contacted school as Advised to see if they could help as to my Childs future plans as sure he going on apprenticeship. I am listed as contacts as father however today had call from ex saying school contacted her and told her about the letter and she rang up to tell me info. Can't believe school broke my confidentiality and called her and apparently they are refusing to give me info directly. I am digested and appalled. Any advice?

To clarify you contacted the school to see if they could help you with your childs future plans or to see if your child is going onto an apprenticeship?

Either way the school is entirely within its right to refer that to the PWC, on my chidrens forms it is clear that their father is not to contact them through school whatsoever, and they always refer back to me. This is not your confidentiality that has been broken as it is about the child and he has already given permission for that to be discussed with his mother.

As has been said post 16 the school or college has to ask the permission of the child to discuss any information with you, it is not a right.

This is a problem my NRP is having with his kids. He has been to the school, told them countless times his address & email address yet gets no letters, no parents evening invites etc.

He's sure the PWC has asked them NOT to keep him informed. How the hell is that legal? What can be done?

Is he named on the birth certificate or was he married at the time of their birth? If that is the case then he needs to prove that he has parental responsibility to the school who then legally have to keep him in the loop with reports, and parents evening invites etc.

Right, thanks for that info. So basically he will have to collect info proving he is their father etc? He was married at time of all their births & his name is on all birth certificates. However PWC is nightmare & he does not have copies of their birth certificates nor would she help him to get them.

He was going to go into the school next Friday with the children to discuss this issue of not being informed, but he's already done that before & nothing changed! The kids could say to the headmaster "This is my Dad & i want him to get my reports" but it doesn't work. Very frustrating. Thanks for advice, i suppose we could somehow request birth certificates from official record ppl? Argh!

You can request a copy of the birth certificate from the office at which the birth was registered. THere is a nominal cost (think its about £7.50) and they are fairly prompt at sending them out, or if you live close enough to the office you can go and pick them up.

Or you can do it online now

Unfortunately in my experience schools will basically do whatever the PWC tells them to do regardless of it being either legally or morally acceptable.

You will have to throw your weight about a bit - I had to get my solicitor to write them a strongly worded letter reminding them I hold parental responsibility as set out in the Childrens Act and that any attempt to withhold information from me is a breach of the law.

Thanks for that info you two. V helpful. I had suggested he ordered copies of their birth certificates anyway, just for his own records

. Some ppl like TFL only accept original birth certificates & not copies which was a nightmare when trying to claim for their child travel cards...

I actually think we may have to get a solicitor to write a letter like yours as he must have talked to the school about 3-4 times. They always say ok, no problem, there is no problem keeping you informed... yet he is not informed on anything! When the children have gone to hospital from school with broken limbs, no school reports, no detention notifications, no parents evening invites, school plays etc he finds out from the children themselves, usually when its too late.

the children tell us their mother has been telling everyone she was a battered wife! Totally untrue but we suspect something like this is on their records.

I am the same I have spoken to the school various times and had a solicitors letter sent to them and they keep saying yes yes you will be kept informed but I've not had any correspondence from them in over a year.

Sometimes you have to wonder why you bother at all as nobody seems to think Dads matter in any way shape or form.
