School broke confidentiality

Contacted school as Advised to see if they could help as to my Childs future plans as sure he going on apprenticeship. I am listed as contacts as father however today had call from ex saying school contacted her and told her about the letter and she rang up to tell me info. Can't believe school broke my confidentiality and called her and apparently they are refusing to give me info directly. I am digested and appalled. Any advice?

    What confidentiality?

    How old is child?

    Who has parental rights?

File a Data Protection request to see what information the school has on you.

  • That I contacted school, they asked pwc whether they should tell me info or not. Surely if I contact them, as they have me listed as father and I get school reports etc, I have a right to know what college they have referred him too? Don't understand why they had to ask pwc for her permission. We both have rights as no court orders etc. Child school leaving age.

    Apparently isn't definately.

Now, I am assuming that things aren't that great between you and your ex because it would make better sense for the pair of you to communicate over your childs future before involving the school.

If I am wrong, you need to check that they have the correct telephone number for you on file. They could have tried to contact you but couldn't get hold of you. If that is the case, then it makes sense to contact your childs mum.

Also, your definition of confidentiality may be different to theres. Discussing an apprenticeship hardly warrants the confidentiality police.

    Well, that's helpful Viktory.
  • Hahaha. That's what happens when you type in a rage!!

Yes things not good between ex/child/ex. School has all correct info as they send me reports, parents eve invites etc and I also put that info into the letter for ease of reference. I just would have thought that they would at least called me to say that they have to ask pwc for her permission first. Sure child doing apprenticeship, ex says college full time so I wrote to school to confirm with them what child doing when leave school.

As the child is over 14 and possibly over 16 it would be the child to discuss this with the school and inform them (but you don't need to inform anybody)

Had they been offered a place in 6th form that was no longer required? Is that what you were informing them of? You don't need to inform the school what a child of that age is doing. 6th form applications and post 16 options and choices are between the young person and tbe school. Parents don't even need to sign the form and have no say in it.
