Cracked water pipe, public walk through

Hi,

Looking for some guidance here. Although it is now fixed I would like to ask who is responsible.

The water board cut off the water to my fathers house because there was a leak. To cut a long story short, the issue was with the pipework outside my fathers house where there is a public walk though. To be able to dig this up, planning permission was needed (and granted). Everything is now solved and my father now has water and a nice bill of £4k.

My question is, if the crack was actually under the 'public walk through' who is liable, the water company or my father?

I hope this makes some sense :embarasse

thanks

Although public walkthrough, was the pipe on your fathers land ?

From my last dealings with severn trent we were responsible from the point it either entered onto our property or the consumer side of the stop c o ck which ever came first.

Sounds like public walk through = right of way on the property.

OP you need to sort out where the pipe moves on to yor father's property to dcide who is liable.

Scottish Water threatened to do this to us but we had it done ourselves (600-700 for £6k about 5 years ago)

Sounds like some of you cost will be to do with planning etc but even then sounds expensive.

Thanks,I will check with the ol' man. The issue was that my father contacted loads of builders but no one wanted to touch the work. Luckily enough, he eventually found a plumber who was willing to do the work. I know they had to close off the path and the plumber had to get a digger in.Thanks for your responses, but I do not feel confident that South West Water will admit liability (or whatever they are called in Cornwall now). Thanks
