Average cost of a week abroad? Would you say..

Would you say around 2.5k to 3k is an average kind of price to pay for a holiday 'abroad' or is that on the high side/low side? I haven't flown anywhere for 10, 11 years now so completely out of touch with prices. I'd be looking for somewhere half decent rather than cheap as possible but I don't want to pay over the odds.
I'd be looking at something like this,
1 weeks holiday abroad, Spain, Balearics, Portugal or similar.
Dates, leaving either 20 August or 27th August or leaving on a weekeday around that time.
Would prefer self-catering but would consider half-board, B&B.
Would prefer an apartment or something with 2 bedrooms, one for me and DH and one for the kids.
Looking for somewhere with a beach, pool, eating places within walking distance. Don't want kids clubs, entertainment, clubs etc.
4 of travelling, 2 adults, 2 kids, ages 9 and 7.
I'm not asking for exact prices or pricing up, more of a rough idea of cost and any ideas of places which could suit us.
Actually, just to add I haven't found anywhere with 2 bedrooms together yet - do families normally share one bedroom?
Thanks for any help or opinions.

There are 2 bed apartments to be had, price depends where you are going and how long for. I think you should find something well within your budget for those dates.
I am in Scotland going in July self catering to Greece and there are 5 of us cost for the week just under £1600.
good luck0 -

Hi ixia, thanks for your reply. That seems like a good price you got there, was that a package or booking yourself independently?0 -
We went here http://www.thomson.co.uk/destinations/europe/spain/costa-dorada/salou/apartments/aparthotel-golden-avenida-suites.html
in July 2009 for first week of the school summer holiday for just under £1000 for a 1 bedroom, self catering package with Thomson, 2adults 2 children aged 6 and 3. We flew on the Friday and let the oldest skip the last day of school as it made about £600 difference in price (they were finishing at 12pm anyway).
Great hotel and excellent kids facilities, short flight, near waterpark and port aventura and also has 2 bedroom apartments.0 -
Can also recommend http://www.thomson.co.uk/destinations/europe/spain/tenerife/los-cristianos/apartments/villa-mandi.html went here in 2008 and it was amazing - although is about 20 mins walk to beach, or6euro taxi. They also have 2 bedroom apartments.0

That sounds a lot, we spend about £3k for a 2 week holiday for 4 of us in the school summer holidays - including everything - transport, accomodation, spending money, eating out most nights. We usually book independantly, we did self-drive type packages with Keycamp/Haven a few years ago but they seem to have shot up in price over the last few years.0

It's been France and Spain the last few years. Went to northern Spain last year, near Girona, static caravan on a campsite "El Delfin Verde" - can recommend it (they have chalets as well which look quite good). Quite a long drive but we took it easy over 3 days about 300 miles a day stopping 2 nights in France. Kids have a DVD player with a screen each which straps onto the headrest so they're quite happy:). As I remember the accomodation was about 80EUR a night so about 1000 for 12 nights and hotels on the way down about 70EUR (could get cheaper but the kids wanted a pool they could jumo into after the drive!). So about 1300EUR for accomodation, about 1100GBP
Crossing (tunnel) about £120 return, petrol about £300, tolls maybe £80.
So £500 travel, £1100 accomodation, and about EUR100 a day (£80) spending money so about £1300 total. Add in insurance, breakdown cover and it was about £3k total.
Probably have to add 10% this year as the £ gone down against the EUR.0 -

Thanks again Zagfles. We've done a couple of driving holidays to France but the furthest we've been is Southern Brittany so not that far down really which makes the weather a bit unpredictable! I'd like to try further south sometime, I take aaaaaaaaaaaages planning though and don't feel like I've left myself enough time this year, LOL and of course a bit worried about the £ against the Euro. Interesting though...0 -

Planning is half the funyou've still got plenty of time, though don't know what availability will be now. Probably best looking at late Aug as it's cheaper and more likely to be availability. And it gives you more planning time...
As 1st Sept is a Thu might find your schools don't go back till the 5th, so a 2 week holiday starting around 20 Aug could be feasable...0
