any bricklayers here?

We have a pier/pillar about 12 bricks in height and 2 bricks deep. Its about 18 months old.

I have noticed that it will wobble if leaned against, but from around half height which the mortar has cracked.

Is it possible to hack out the cracked mortar and apply new mortar to give some solidity or does the weak layer and everything above need to come off and be redone?

I wld presume you may be better taking off the complete loose section and cleaning it completely back to the brick and re fixing it back in place, we had it and it was either strip the whole lot back brick to brick or drill and fix a small steel rod in the centre and re cement back in place, it was the fastest way and stayed in place.
