landing = 1.78m x 2.36m
hall = 1.8m x 4.75m
their are 12 stairs eac 10'' x 9'' and 2' 9'' wide

For the "square" areas, just multiply length by width to get square metres. For stairs, ask at the carpet shop, just tell them how many stairs and how wide they are, they've got a formula for this.
BUT ..... To be honest, don't measure it yourself ! Your own measurements are fine if you're just wanting to get an idea of how much it's going to cost ( i.e. you go to the shop and look at carpets that are so much per square metre ). But when it comes to actually buying the carpet, get the shop / carpet fitter to measure it for you. They won't charge any extra for this, and if they start laying the carpet and suddenly discover the measurements are wrong, that's their problem ! If you've supplied the measurements and they're wrong, you could find that you'll still have to pay for the carpet, as it's been cut, but it's too small for your room.
Also bear in mind that you normally have to buy a bit more than you need. For example, if your room is 1.9 metres wide, the carpet is usually manufactured in, say, 3, 4 and 5 metre widths, so you buy the appropriately sized width. And if you have 2 rooms that each need a 2 metre width, it's better to buy it from a 4 metre roll, rather than doing each room seperately from a 1.5 metre roll and having lots of waste. But any decent shop will do all these calculations for you, and they know the widths each particular carpet comes in, so they can work out the most economical way of doing it.
Like I say, don't worry about it, let the fitter measure for you, then you'll have no problem.0 -
Not as simple as that - carpet comes in standard widths - you need to know what widths are available in the carpet you want, and also which way you want any pattern to run. It would also help to have measurements all in metric or all in imperial not a mix.
As a rough starting point, a 4m wide carpet would cut into 2 sections 2m wide to do the hall and landing, so to do the hall you'd need it to be 4.75 long. However to do 12 stairs at 10"high (.25m) and 9"front to back (.225m) you would need 5.7 metres at about 0.85m wide. You'd get most of this out of the landing half of the carpet but would need some on top. If you were guesstimating prices I'd reckon that a 5.5m by 4m piece would probably do it if it was a plain carpet which would be 22square metres. However you'd be better off getting someone to measure it properly that knows carpet fitting as this is only really a guess and could be wildly different if you wanted a pattern in the carpet etc that effects the way it fits and the cutting.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Most companies will do a free quote for you if you go into the shop,or send someone out to measure and quote for free,
Would you really rely on someone on here to do it for you, I wouldnt to be honest.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I've never known a carpet retailer not come out to measure (even when I was carpeting a single rectangular room).
However, an estimate from someone here is at least useful for estimating the likely total cost while 'shopping around'.0 -
