Mowing ultra-long grass

Hi all. I'm having trouble mowing my lawn, which somehow grew very very long when I wasn't looking. I now have a rotary mower, but it seems the grass is simply too long for it. Will I need to cut it back manually with sheers or similar, and if so, how much needs to come off?

thanks

Why not leave the mower at the edge of the grass and maybe it will cut it "when you aren't looking". :p

Put the blade up to the highest possible setting to start with, and if possible cut it at that height - leave it a few days to recover and green up a bit before cutting it down to the desired final length. Make sure you do it as late as you can in the day so the grass is really dry (before the dew starts though).

If that doesn't work see if you can borrow a petrol mower as they have a lot more beef.

Next best option is borrow a strimmer and knock it back a bit with that.

If all else fails you may get some success by tilting the mower back slightly so that it effectively cuts higher at the front and then chops it down further at the back - you'll probably have to do this without the grass box on and rake up the grass afterwards (or go back over it to "hoover" it up once its all cut down). Make sure no-one is around in front of the mower in case it flicks something out. This is going to be hard going but probably easier than hand shears.

I will either be paying someone to cut mine (which accidentally grew too long, when I wasn't looking. :p), or will have to fork out for an expensive petrol one.

I'm hopeless at cutting grass regularly so when it gets to long with the mower I strim it down, then go over it again with the Flymo.

Hire a strimmer or borrow a pony. :D
