post a hijackthis log in the meantime, and your ram figures. (and commit charge if it's xp)

re battery pack, depends how often you need to go over an hour on battery, dimming the screen will make it last longer when you have no power supply

Hell if you really want to spend some money buy yourself an SSD drive, that'll certainly speed things up. After you've confirmed you haven't got a malware issue and unneeded start up items.

Or if not wanting to break the bank, a ssd hybrid drive.

Or even just see if your hard drive is old and slow, it may benefit to upgrade to a bigger drive that is 7200rpm for example if you have a old drive in.

Certainly try a reinstall of windows, check if you need more ram.

Or get something like a second hand dell d630 for a couple of hundred, built like a tank, last years, still very fast, and wont drop to bits like many consumer laptops from a store will.

Ran full scan overnight and it came up clean for malware.
Just looked at my system info and it says 2.37 GB ram. Hmm - maybe I only went from 1 to 2 GB.
I could do with it always lasting more than an hour - otherwise I could get an extra power lead and stay plugged in when working downstairs. The fan always seems to be whirring - would that drain the battery?
Will go and do the other checks now - but am out of range for the next day - so may go all quiet!
