Fitted wardrobes

Hello

we have just moved into our new house. Our huge, old wardrobe won't fit upstairs so we are stuck without anywhere to put our clothes, which are in black bags all over the place.

our bedroom has a big alcove which i think would be perfect for fitted wardrobes, but this is a totally new idea to me.

where does one get such a thing? would i look for a local carpenter? is a carpenter the right kind of person? would somewhere like ikea do flexible enough units to get something that fitted the space? are there other companies i should look at?

and finally what sort of range of cost would it be? i know it would depend on how big, what is required etc, but should i be expecting £100's or £1000's (if it's £1000's i am going to have to come up with a plan c :))

Thank you

thank you

Are the walls on your alcove perfectly straight?

The most cost effective method is sliding wardrobe doors. An average door is about £120 plus track set. For a 3metre run, allow say £400 - £500 for m,ayterials. Its a days job for a chippy and a 'lad'/ Any decent handyman will do it as well. You could get it all done including hanging rails for less than £1000 inc labour and materials.

We have Ikea Pax, it comes in 50cm and 1m widths, and 2 heights, so is fairly flexible. We've got 2x1 metre cupboards and 2x50cm ones with a fillet either side to make up the 5cm shortfall! I especially love the internal fittings as OH and I can have totally different layouts. We have wire rack shelving and plastic drawers as they were much cheaper than the solid wood fittings.

Total cost for a 3m run was about £500, 4 years ago. We built them ourselves, which was quite difficult as we have the taller version and needed a lot of floor space to construct them. OH also screwed battens to the wall so they are firmly fixed in place.

We have high gloss berry/burgandy doors (now discontinued) which we love, but you can always change the entire look by replacing the doors on the original carcasses.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Any suggestions on the best place to get doors if going down the DIY sliding door route. All the ones I've seen were either ugly or extremely expensive.

    DIY sheds. B&Q, Wickes, etc

Ikea do the portable hanging rails, you might want to get a couple of those short-term, and sell them on eBay or Gumtree once the alcove is built

    Hi There,
It really depends on how many doors you need, We bought a made to measure two door kit from slidewardrobesdirect.co.uk in Minimalist style for just over £500 and we were really pleased with the quality and look, They do other styles at different prices. I fitted them myself in an afternoon, they came with softclose which was a bit fiddly, but were really pleased with the result and we also bought some aluminium uprights with shelves and hangingrails for the internals.
  • I too am looking to have a 3m wide by 2.3m high wardrobe fitted. I am looking for solid oak doors, along with shelves and hanging rails. Looking to spend around £1000. Have been trailing through the various companies on the internet that sell wardrobe doors, etc, but many of them appear expensive, and/or their doors are MDF (not solid oak) - which is not what I am looking for. Any kind advice from fellow forum users on which sites sell quality wardrobe doors that are made of solid wood, would be appreciated. Thank you, Christopher
  • Most companies do use MDF these days and they do look good.
  • I found a website which is providing fitted wardrobes at very affordable and discount prices, visit here fittedwardrobes.com
