Removing old glue from upholstery?

Wonder if anyone knows how to remove old glue from upholstery? We've just bought an old settee - don't need to re-upholster it as its come up really nicely with some cleaning. Only slight problem is that there was some fringing around the bottom, which we had to take off as it wasn't in great condition. This had been glued & stapled on and we're now left with horrible, hard, dark brown patches where the blobs of glue were. We're going to replace the trim, but the application of the old glue is a bit random in places & so it won't quite cover all of the marks. The fabric is (I think) a sort of draylon. Any ideas on how to remove it?

try using a stanley blade to remove the large hard bits.
and a heat gun/hair dryer may help to remove most of the rest.
