Possibly been scammed?

Me and the OH bought some V Festival weekend tickets on eBay for £380... The seller, sent us a copy of his confirmation of order which 3 numbers starred out of the order number.....

I logged onto the site where he'd bought the tickets and tried all 1000 combinations (I have paranoia issues lol) and none of them seem to correspond with his email as having bought tickets... So I'm wondering if perhaps he's tried to pull a fast one on us??

Not sure how to verify the actual tickets exist, he's refusing to give us the full reference number, and is ignoring my emails asking for a screen shot of his order page (with personal details blanked out)...

Any advice would be good

Sorry but it doesn't make sense to me.
Have you paid? If so why didn't you get the actual ticket?

If not did you say you wanted proof before you bid, or what's the point of bidding and not fulfilling the contract by introducing new requirements (screenshot etc...), for that amount of money if there is something you need you would ask before you buy wouldn't you?

I have never bought tickets on ebay, but if I was as worried as you I would not buy rather than mess people around like this.

Checking 999 combinations? Using an email address that may not be the right one?
Is it just me thinking certain people should stay away from ebay?

Like terra firma says if you have won tickets (and paid for them|) then demand to get them. if selller won't co operate and assuming you are still within the 45 day claim window slam in a paypal chargeback for INR to protect yourself.

You can only be scammed if you let it happen, so be proactive here and don't let this guy walk all over you.

The best advice is to follow is what it says on the official V Festival website and not to buy tickets from ebay...

We purchased the tickets on the understanding that the seller would forward on his 'proof' of booking the tickets so we could verify they were legitimate (tickets for the event aren't sent out until about 10 days before the Festival)....
Once we'd paid, he sent across a realistic looking email but with the reference number blanked out, I asked him for either the full reference number or a screen shot to show the actual tickets had been booked, and he didn't respond - I phoned the company he'd booked them with who said nobody with his email had booked any tickets with them...

Terra_firma, I'm not sure how I messed him around, I bid on the auction on the understanding that he would provide me with proof of the tickets, which he claimed on the listing he would do once the Auction had ended.... What he provided me with, was not proof that any tickets had been booked at all.


Anyway I spoke to eBay and they said as there is strong reason to believe the email is fraudulent, and the fact he doesn't have a legitimate contact telephone number, but instead a number beginning 123 - They have allowed us to open a case now, and we will be refunded within 10 days.

Yes it does make a bit more sense, but what I don't understand is why you were asking for proof of booking instead of the ticket themselves, how were you going to be able to use them? Or is it because they had not received them yet, and they were going to hand them over later?

I think they asked for proof of booking to show that the seller definately had purchased the tickets - as the actual tickets themselves don't get sent until 10 days before the event.

Last year I bought tickets for an event a year away - the seller sent me their confirmation in lieu of the tickets, which then arrived a year later with me.

it could easily be a fake proof of purchase, and if you are expecting to have to wait for the tickets, the seller may be hoping you wait 45 days before you realise he is a scammer. this way you would not be able to put the claim in through payapl, and it would become a lot harder to get your money back.

That's the problem with buying tickets, but the op appears to have a good method going to protect themselves, and they have caught out a very dodgy scammer.
