Toyota Hiace version
Hi all, I'm unsure which Hiace model to choose.
There are two rear-door models in the Hiace - one has a single tailgate hatchback-type door and the other double barn-doors.
Has anyone had either of these models? There doesn't seem to be many barn-door versions around but the majority of other makes seem to have barn doors.
I know that for getting a ladder on/off from the rear would be possible with the barn doors open whereas the tailgate would have to be closed. I'm also concerned that regular use would put strain on the tailgate door and components.
Has anyone had both types?
Also, there are two power outputs - 120 and 90bhp I think. Is the 90bhp adequate for carrying a load of up to 1000kg?
Finally, has anyone successfully changed the centre lap-belt to a three-point shoulder belt?
Thanks for any replies.

We have 2 Hiaces, power van (yeah right lol). One has the tailgate the other has barn doors but to be honest it really depends what you want from the rear as its six of one half a dozen of the other. The tailgate is nice when its raining as it gives a bit of shelter when your getting stuff in and out. The barn doors are ideal if you carry lots of small stuff and only need to open one side to access what you want from inside.
Both are getting on a bit now as both on R plates but they have been very reliable with nothing major ever need doing to it. We were going to replace one of them last year but as it flew through the MOT it has stayed, it doesn't seem to want to die!!!
.
I will say they scrub front tyres no matter how many times you get the tracking/balancing doing or what brand of tyre you put on. We only put cheapies on the van as they don't last long enough. The wheels also weld themselves to the hub and are a complete pig to remove when changing a tyre for instance.
You looking at a used or new model?? The newer ones aren't much different to the olders ones just a facelift not sure about the engines whether or not they are new. Interior is exactly the same though.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
If its often windy then barn doors can slam in the wind, thats why you see that kitesurfers and windsurfers dont buy vans with barn doors.
I had a T reg hiace with a tailgate, it was great but it lacked grunt and didnt do well on fuel if you went over 60mph.0 -
What about the Hyundai H1-Is it as good as the Hiace with better fuel economy?0
