Westminster Mattresses?

Hi chaps

Still in the process of looking for a new mattress. Had some good advice on here and gone down to a local independant who was not pushy.

Anyway tried out a couple of mattresses and wondered if one of the knowledgable chaps could offer some advice.

One of the mattresses (I think it's this one) was on offer for around £250 and IIRC was made by Westminster Beds. I found their website but couldn't see this mattress listed so any opinion of them would be most welcome.

Just found out that Westminster Beds are owned/same company as Apollo Beds.

Have seen another range by "Highgate" - are they another sub company?

We get one mattresses from them a 1000 Pocket Spring called the Chatsworth, it's pretty good value for money and seems reasonable well built for the money too.

But not sure on their other ranges. Their agent is a close friend of my boss and he wouldn't take on an agency that sells rubbish. As agents only get paid commission, no salary (unlike reps), he needs it to be a good product.

    Cheers for the feedback.

We quite like the Deep Sleep Beds that we tried out in another branch of that shop today.

They didn't have the Chatsworth model in there (is this it here btw?) but had the following two.

    Deep Sleep Silk 1000

    Deep Sleep Platinum 2000

Can you give me your thoughts on the specs of both of these and if it's worth spending the extra £££.

I personally thought the 2000 was a tiny bit more comfy but wondered if a Pillow Top was a good idea - sure I read somewhere they weren't. Missus liked both (and a Westminster Cashmere 1000) but I think the Deep Sleep may be a better buy and she is not sure it's worth spending the extra £££.

    Appreciate your feedback

    Cheers

ps - I only asked about Highgate as they do a Cashmere 1000 Mattress as well and thought it might be the same one just rebranded differently.

Both are good mattresses and at those prices very good value for money.

The Platinum is NOT a true pillowtop, if you look it's just extra piping around the boarder to "look" like a pillowtop. Your right to be a little but wary of them as they are somewhat gimmicky. It cost a lot more to produce a pillowtop as the tape edging has to be down 3 times instead of 2. Tape edging is where they sow the boarder of the mattress to the top and bottom. Technically it's one of the harder jobs of the production. But in this case is just piping added when the boarder is made. Still only 2 lots of tape edging.

You will sink more into the Platinum as well, as it has slightly more memory. Buy the best you can afford, but a mattress should be comfortable for your back but also your pocket!

    Thanks for the information Pinkypants.

Would you say that perhaps the Platinum 2000 isn't quite as good as it's made out then?

Anyway yesterday we managed to pop into another of their branches (who told me they were no longer linked but just use the same name) and found a couple of other mattresses which we liked as well.

    Here's one of them

Vienna Mattress by Gilt Edge - £349 instore.

    Hestia V2150 Mattress - £599 instore.

To be honest the Hestia is probably out of our price range but thought I would take a look online to secure the best price.

I couldn't seem to find the Vienna one or hardly any Gilt Edge mattresses online - Do you know anything about the brand?

Sorry for all the questions and as many others just want to make the right decision.

    Cheers

I'm saying it's better then a pillowtop, because it isn't a true pillowtop. It's just designed to look like one.

As for the others I'll try and have a look later.

Just had a quick look. As D.Ross says tooooooo many springs.

Either they are double deckered or lots of very small springs.

The most full size pocket springs that you can fit into a 5ft mattress is 1600, you run out of room after that. So the springs are either 1000 on top of 1000 in the 2000 case, or just much smaller weaker springs. You'll be better off with a 1000 count on its own.

Very few companies actually offer the very small spring option, most just use the double up method and the reason for this is because we are obsessed with the numbers. We think the more the better! Other reason is that a 2000 count will give a different feel to a 1000 count due to the under spring acting as a shock absorber.

Spring count wise 1000-1600 is the kind of numbers you want to go for. Avoid like the plague the 600 and 800 counts!

If you can afford them and find them, the Kaymed 1600 is a wonderful mattress. Also Healthbeds make a very good product. But prices are slightly more top end.

Thanks for the advice guys much appreciated.

I was leaning towards the Platinum 2000 as it felt really comfortable and D.Ross mentioned that the Silk 1000 memory foam probably wasn't deep enough.

The Silk 1000 was comfortable but I have to admit I personally didn't think it was quite as nice as the Platinum model, although I am now a bit worried that there may be too many springs in the 2000 Platinume from what you just posted and what D.Ross said about the Vienna by Gilt Edged (same spring count?).

In that case would I be better off with the Platinum vs the Silk 1000?

Don't get me wrong double deckered springs aren't that bad, I have sold loads in the past and not have any complaints on one as yet.

Like I said it's done to create a different feel to 1000 springs.

Also at the price you have seen it for, it's a lot of mattress for the money. If you like the mattress and the price, go for what you feel is most comfortable.
