    V many thanks for all replies, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

    Yes, I'm technically a 'Ms Wilson', should have explained, that's why I was afraid the council might think we're more than just friends (were definitely not, and won't be!! :) )

    As far as his situation, he's aware of the tax issue but we don't think its a problem, he's checking it out, and he knows he'll lose his council tax discount. Can't really think of anything that might be a problem except the 'male landlord, female tenant' issue.

    nope you can claim housing benefit as its a friend not a relative...my mum did not so long ago and we didnt think they'd allow it but she just had to take a letter in with date she started paying rent, date moved in and what the rent is :)
