Scottish Power Energy Save 9 - two different offers

Just in case anyone else is on an Energy Ssaver scheme (I was on 6) and has been invited to renew, don't fall into the same trap as me.

I received an email telling me I would be moved onto standard tarriff if I did nothing. They offered the option to move to Energy Saver 9, but there was no prices in the email. So I googled "scottish power energy saver 9" and looked at the prices which were much more but I guess these days they're all going up - so I decided to go ahead.

So I completed the accept button in the form they emailed. When I completed it I noticed a hot spot saying "conditions" in the email - pretty difficult to see - so I had a look. It was also Online Energy Saver 9 - it looked absolutely identical ... but being a suspicious !!!!!! I thought I'd double check - but it had a completely different and inflated set of rates:

The first is dated February, the second August.

Even Energy Saver 14 seems cheaper than 9. Now dumb I know, but I thought that the "9" meant a distinct pricing tarrif as against "8" or "10". I didn't realise that there are lots of different pricing variations and offers of "9"'s!

The increase price of gas (first 670kwh band) over my current rate has moved from 3.143 to 7.464 - an increase of 219%. I don't recall any of the press talking about 219% increases in gas tarrifs.

Are they trying to cheat us do you think .......

Anyway this may have been covered in the forum but thought I'd post just in case others have been taken in.

  • I recently switched to Energy Saver 14 after confirming with Scottish Power over the phone and on their web site that this tarriff will not increase in price on Aug 1st.
All other variable tariffs are affected by the increase.

Best to check on uswitch as to whether their the cost of the ES14 works out the same or cheaper than your existing tariff. Then check whether the increase on your existing tariff (about 20% gas...) will be worth switching too.

I also used SimplySwitch which is offering £40 cashback after 90 days.

    Worth a try. :p

Oh my am i relieved!! Thank you NW_MAN you have just answered my question....i changed to ES14 this morning from EON thinking it was a good deal then went into panic mode thinking i'd made a mistake!!!....i suppose it's not guaranteed that SP may increase ES14 prices down the line though?.....any thoughts?
  • They did confirm that the ES14 price could change down the line. But i worked out that if this does happen, then i shouldn't be any worse off than i am now. If your saving is more than a couple of hundred, like mine, then i think the switch seems logical.
