damp

We are buying an old farm house, which is a solid brick construction, it has quite a bit of damp, but has been empty for quite a while.
We are about to get a damp survey done, however I've been reading that old houses should be allowed to breath and that chemical damp proofing is not a good idea in an old building?

Also any views on improving insulation on a solid brick house?
What i've seen so far seems that it would stop the house building?

I had electro osmosis dpc installed in my home in the UK, it worked well but all the plaster needed removing to an height of about 1 metre and then it needed re-plastering.
