what about a facebook page - lots of towns are doing that now and businesses and locals post updates, tourist info, whats on etc.

There have been two or three attempts at this locally here. All haven't lasted beyond a year because there isn't enough profit in it for the work involved.

I think it is a nice idea, community wise, and there is no reason you couldn't start up a free website via something like tumblr or blogger to promote local business' that way. And as said you can upload video for free to sites like vimeo and YouTube and link those into your blog.

Personally I'd tend to avoid facebook and tumblr as they don't show up in Google searches very well but thats not to say don't use them at all.

It comes down to how much time and effort you have to put into the above.
