Just had new dell hard drive fitted after failure of old one.
Only got windows vista & IE 7 in process of re-installing & wanted to put security software on first.
Am trying to install free Avira Antivirus, but despite trying download from 2 separate websites incl Avira's own, keep getting the following message.
"Installation of Microsoft Runtime Redistributable Kit has failed"
I dont want to start downloading anymore stuff till i have my security in place anyone offer any advice please?

Probably just means that Windows is updating in the background, you'll have to wait until that is done. Could be awhile...

In the meantime, you can stick Malwarebytes on there and activate the 14 day trial. It doesn't care about Windows updates:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
The 14 day trial gives you access to the realtime guard, so you can have peace of mind until you get something else on. After the 14 day trial, it'll just go back to being a free on demand scanner as normal. Anyone with a Windows machine would benefit from regularly running scans with Malwarebytes, as it often catches what the traditional antivirus programs miss.
One warning about Avira - I'd say no to 'Ask' toolbar or the Avira webguard. Also select a custom install and say no to anything 'Uniblue'. Uniblue is a dodgy company, and Avira should know better than to associate themselves with it.0
