MAM anti colic starter set

In Southampton TK Maxx they have Large MAM anti colic starter sets for £16. There were loads of them there when we went in today and on the MAM website are priced at £45.00.

It includes 6 x 200ml bottles, 3 x 160ml bottles, 3x 120ml bottles, 6 x stage 1 teats, 2 x stage 2 teats, 6 sealing discs, 1 soft spout, 1 handle and 1 newborn soother.

All the bottles are self sterilizing in the microwave (3 minutes for 1 bottle and 8 minutes for 6 in the microwave together) and I believe these bottles also attach to the MAM breast pump.

Can't post links I don't think but you can see the starter set on the MAM website. No idea if it's at other stores but worth a shot if you need bottles!

Surely this is against the WHO code? It undermines breastfeeding especially containing a soother so shouldn't be reduced or on any kind of promotion?

(nothing against you OP - I'm sure there are many who want to know about it).

It's not as bottles etc can be on promotion, infant formula for ages up to either 6 months or 1 year (can't remember which!) cannot be on promotion, advertised or reduced.

Bottles are used frequently by people who express breast milk as well so in certain situations it can encourage people to continue giving their child breast milk, like if someone was to return to work while breast feeding.

Also soothers are fine as well. Lots of breast fed babies use them though the recommendation isn't to introduce them for the first 6 weeks so breast feeding can establish.

Good deal angelcake89, if my LO was a bit younger I'd be looking out for this but I've bought all the bottles now!

Elm, bottles are on promo all the time in Boots, Mothercare etc and loads of BF babies use dummies. Its not undermining bf'ing at all. bottles are used for expressed milk by loads of bfing parents.

    No, I've checked and -

    The code stipulates that there should be absolutely no promotion of breastmilk substitutes, bottles and teats to the general public;

    http://www.unicef.org/nutrition/index_24805.html

with the soother being for newborns the pack is clearly aimed at babies of less than six months.

eta. it's up to six months, follow on formula can be advertised as seen by that stupid iron one.

haha ok then I'm not 100% sure what allows them to put bottles on promotion but with massive retailers like boots and mothercare having offers on bottles I'm fairly certain it's not illegal.

Either way if it is then hopefully T K maxx and the like will be funding promotion of breastfeeding from some sort of fine and I got some bargainous bottles for the boy!
  • Unfortunately, some children do not take kindly to breastfeeding so an alternative has to be found. No 1 son didn't and I felt very guilty, no 2 son was on the breast 24/7 and I felt guilty in forcing him to take to a bottle. There is enough stress on new mothers - please don't get too excited about introducing bottles at any time - each baby to their own.

Ugh! Sick of BF'ing being rammed down new moms throats by all the healthcare professionals! It is up to the mom to decide! Sometimes they choose not to BF, sometimes they can't for various reasons. Hooray for bottle feeding! lol

    **rant over** lol

OK didn't want to start a BF/formula debate. Which ever you do you can use MAM bottles for expressed milk or formula so if you want to give the baby a single feed from a bottle or feed them soley from a bottle as long as said baby is happy, healthy and loved it's all that matters really right?

The code is there to protect mothers and babies, not attack anyone.

There are many negative health implications (both short and long term) for babies who aren't breastfed (and their mothers) which is why there are laws in place to help to make breastfeeding the norm.

I Bf my 1st child for 18 months. I was super perfect breastfeeding mother. My child was going to be tne smartest, most allergy free child ever! (fed all organic as well)

My second child was breastfed unsuccessfully for 6 days during which the poor child starved. He ended up in intensive care. He then went on the big baby formula of the very worst kind and was the happiest baby ever.

Now they teenagers. It made not a jot of difference. My bf one has eczema. Both are healthy, have no food allergies, are suitable weight etc. Bottle fed one is more academic.

If my second had been my first I woukd have felt like a failure and the sanctimonious misguided attitudes make mums feel guilty when they shouldn't. Babies used to die (and still do in many places in the world) from malnutrition as formula wasnt available. Luckily we live in a society where we can access formula- otherwise my child would have died as he wasn't accessing enough food from failed breastfeeding.

Don't lecture about bf. It is not always a choice. My second had a dummy as well (shock horror).
