I was using Nero 9, but it !!!!!!ed up on me and wouldnt reinstall (no idea why). I tried downloading the free version of Nero, but that wouldnt work either.
I like to back up retail dvd and put them on disk for my kids, so when they scratch them, it doesnt matter.
I need something simple to use that'll play on any brand of dvd player, but most of all, I need it to be free! I've got windows vista
can anyone help, please?

Take a look at this guide
It tells you how to use free software to rip and shrink DVDs (since commercial DVDs can store more than blank DVDs)
Just bear in mind, copying a DVD may be unlawful, even if you legally purchased it and it is for backup purposes. There may also be copy protection technology on the disk which means the techniques described in the guide will not work0 -
