I missed the word 'some' which would have made the post clearer.

Germany does but I'm not that well traveled so don't know what the public transport is like in countries I haven't been to.

Germany doesn't have free public transport so why mention other countries having free transport if you are not actually aware of any that do?

    I have a bus pass.

I completed a very simple form from my local council, included a note from my GP to confirm that I have a medical condition which means I would not be given a driving licence (and that the condition is not the result of drug/alcohol abuse). My bus pass took about 2 weeks to arrive.

Oh, and I am 10 years short of being 60....and for what is worth I am British (but born abroad)

I think I need to correct you there as your comments may cause someone to not apply for a bus pass.

Not being able to access a bus pass because of drink or drugs abuse is not the same as :
...and that the condition is not the result of drug/alcohol abuse

A condition which has been caused directly by drink or drug abuse IS covered, but if it was simply that if they abuse the substances IT IS NOT.

    A subtle difference.

Thanks for the link. I've had a quick look and it seems to mention epilepsy specifically, although it is on an epilepsy website so that doesn't necessarily mean that you won't get the pass if your seizures were not epilepsy related. Definitely worth investigating at least.

In which case, would all Type 1 sufferers be entitled to a bus pass if they decided not to monitor their blood levels regularly and ensure the correct amount of the correct type of insulin is injected?

    I think not.

You may be on a restricted 3 year licence, but diabetes of any type is now so easilly controlled with modern types of insulin, methods of taking insulin and modern methods of self checking.

It is a 3 minute process at worst, and nowadays nobody should really find that it interferes with their lifestyle. In fact, there are many that have a good regime, live life to the full, and nobody would even think that they were diabetic.

Are you sure he had an epileptic fit?

It sounds to me that he is not contolling his diabetes too well.

To the OP, I would sa contact your council in the first instance. I know in my city you complete a form (with doc's signature) and you are given one within 6weeks. I think its only a 6month one to start with and then they last a year.

Hope you get some help :D

It is likely your friend could have landed you with a fine for not paying the fare.

As I understand it, the Germans do not check tickets often but when they do you can be certain of being fined if you don't have a valid ticket/pass.

There are environmental pressure groups who seek to get free public transport but they haven't succeeded yet.

The best option is to phone your local council and ask.

I travel on local buses quite often and I`m amazed at the number of passes shown when it`s clear that the holders are no way near 60+ and are often non British.

The issue of concessionary travel passes is NOT just confined to the over 60s.

They are probably season tickets/weekly/monthly passes *rolleyes*

I filled in a form and sent in the snotty "suspending your licence" letter from the DVLA. It's funny that I got that one because I've never been fit to drive!

Anyone could have a seziure if their blood sugar was very low, diabetic or not, epileptic or not, so I would be surprised if anti seizure medication was prescribed if someone was just having hypo induced seizures, as stopping the hypos would stop the seizures, the doctors wouldn't just say 'just go on having hypos, we'll give you this medication so you won't have a seizure with low blood sugar, you will just collapse and go into a coma and risk death OK?', so I'm guessing the OP's son has something more complicated going on, it's not just hypos maybe, so stop all this blaming him for not controlling his blood sugar!

Anyway, it's not relevant whether he is unable or unwilling to control his blood sugar, he still cannot drive, so is entitled to a bus pass. It's not a simple condition to control, diabetes, without hypos, unless you are happy to have high blood sugars all the time and have all the associated complications, it does take some time to get used to.
