Changing cost of p&p after accepting payment?

  • OK spoke to Amazon again there and they say that it is NOT allowed for sellers to change the rate of P&P. They said that the P&P is set by Amazon in order to protect the customer from situations such as this and they are taking the matter very seriously. They have contacted their seller team for someone to get on to the seller immediately. They also sent me a confirmation email and thanked for informing them of this practice.
  • Seller has 'spat the dummy out'. I suggested to him that Amazon's P&P rate was sufficent for the item when posted via Roayl Mail and asked why he refused to use them. He replied without mentioning why he wouldn't use Royal Mail, go figure:
Full refund provided. The fault is with Amazon. What they are doing is pushing retailers selling to you and penalising private sellers accordingly. If I sign up as a merchandiser and pay a monthly fee I can charge you whatever I like as postage. As I am not a retailer but an honest member of the pubic I cannot set the correct postage and I am penalised to favour the retailer. I suggest you purchase this direct from a retailer or shop and pay the full price

    Cheers

The highlighted bit may very well explain the seller's intentions. Maybe he aspires to "charge...whatever (he) likes"?

Carlo - tell the seller to dry his eyes. He knows the rules, but doesn't agree with them. Fine. In that case he should stick to eBay, where he can charge whatever P&P he wants. An "honest member of the public" would honour the P&P charges that Amazon stipulate should be used.

But then surely the seller could refuse to post the item and insist you take a refund?

Yep, but then OP could buy from someone a little more professional.

Me personally? Nope. But I have bought enough from it to know some sellers use Royal Mail and charge reasonable P&P costs, whilst others use couriers who charge ridiculous rates for NI. Guess which ones I use ...

Glad to see this is being resolved by Amazon. Nevertheless, it is important to note for future reference (not just on Amazon, but any online retailer) that the contract is not formed until payment is taken from your card. So legally speaking, the cost of P&P, the cost of the item and even the description of the items itself are subject to change UNTIL payment is taken.

Providing the seller informs you of the changes to the terms of the contract and provides you with the option to proceed or walk-away, they are not breaking any laws.

That's the thing though the payment was taken from my card for both the item and P&P then I received the email a few days later saying he wanted more money.

The order has been cancelled and awaiting my refund.

Which is why Amazon have ousted him as a little toe-rag trying to squeeze more money from you by circumventing Amazon's merchant rules. :p

Wonder will they actually do anything about it though? I left some negative feedback on him.
