Gas safety check

Not sure if this should be here or not.
Had a call earlier today from Siemens on behalf of British Gas, saying they needed to book in a gas safety check. I asked what it was about as I had not heard of the supplier carrying out a check and was told that it needs to be carried out every 2 years.
As a tenant, my landlord arranges one every year as the law states, but as I say, not heard of supplier carrying out one before. Anyone heard of this and if so, what is the reasoning behind it, other than the fact that they are checking there are no leaks or damage to pipes etc?

Gas suppliers are required by their operating licence to read the meter at least once every 2 years.
It is this they call a safety inspection ... reading the meter.
If you have the meter read, then the clock starts again for another 2 years - that could explain why you have not had this before.
It doesn't matter is the house is owned or rented, this is an operating licence condition of the supplier.
As a tenant, you are quite right that the LL must arrange a Landlord's gas safety certificate (CP12) - this is entirely different."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
