I resent buying apricot jam!

Just about to marzipan and ice my cake and I am seriously thinking about using marmalade this year! It really annoys me that I have to buy a whole jar of apricot jam every year for this as I dont really enjoy it for any other purpose. I have a not very orangey marmalade on the go at the moment with only small bits of rind that I could easily pick out.
Does anyone else do this - does it sound OK or am I just being unbelievably mean and stingy!

i hate apricots yuck
if we stay in a hotel i always take those little pots if they have apricot for this very purpose!! all family members are instructed to do the same!!0 -
I have used marmalade and it's fine. Basically you can use anything that will stick the marzipan to the cake and won't taste revolting - apricot jam is not necessary, it's another ploy!
Happy Cakeing!:T0 -
I totally understand this. I would be the same. I have a lovely recipe for a raspberry gateau with cream and raspberries in it but the recipe also includes a small amount of amaretto liqueur. Ive never tasted it and don't want to buy a big expensive bottle of this just so that I can make the cake!
However, did you know that Morrisons sell tiny jars of jam, marmalade and apricot jam? Think they're about 40p. I know because I like apricot jam and marmalade and bought some little pots this week. Im the only one in the family that eats it and if I buy a normal jar it goes off before Ive eaten it all.0 -
You could use marmalade, shreddless or heat it and then press it through a seive.0

we use honey instead of apricot jam on our christmas cake. warm it gently in the microwave first so it spreads really easily, it's lovely.0

My cake has orange peel in it so I thought marmalade would be better than apricot jam. I resent buying jam of any sort as I make all my preserves. Not apricot though as that would cost the earth.0 -
As has been said, you can use any type of preserve - I tend to use whatever I've got in - seedless raspberry jam is particularly good and adds a nice flavour to the cake.

Thanks for that. I used to buy a jar of apricot jam every year for the cake and we don't like it so it grew fur in the cupboard until I chucked it when the next Xmas arrived. This year I was wondering if I could use some seedless bramble jelly I have, and emboldened by this thread I shall boldly go and do it, thanks all !0

Maybe an oopps moment, but i didnt use anything on my cake, i just put the marzipan on!!!! I did feed the cake before with a fair bit of brandy, so it was slightly sticky naturally, i suppose i will find out if ive made a mistake when we cut into it!!!!0
