Personally I would put in a complaint against the Police Force that accepted the spurious theft report.

Prehaps you'd like to explain the Home Office rule on eithcal crime recording to the forum. To help the OP make an informed decision as to whether they should follow you advice or not.

1.....so car at sales garage and he cant sell it
2...trader comes in and offers to take it away and sell it and he will pay later
3...car then goes to another trader and he cant sell it,so he gives it to 4...another sales garage to sell which they do but they dont pay for it either

so no .1. reports car as stolen when in fact it wasnt so where in the investigation does 2 and 3 not come into it and why arent the police prosecuting no1 for wasting police time?
i assume garage 4 is a sess pit of growling dogs and gold chains,so for what its worth its probably best complaining to all the relevant authorities and also a formal complaint to the police but leaving the car where it is because frankly the fees now acrued are just a joke and its the police who give these jokers the right to charge them on a daily basis ,it could even be a council storage compound, welcome to GB nuts by the way

"God know why he Police impounded it as the person reporting it wasn't the registered keeper."...That is a point I keep going over.

We did show the officer who lifted it on the Thursday night all our documents, told them we did an HPI report that was clear,as it was not a stolen issue then, and also explained that we even taxed it at our local post office.
He was under the impression we would get the car back the next day as it was obviously a mistake..That did not happen.
I think I will stop chasing this up with the police because even last night they promised me that they would ring me up before midnight about any progress, and again I was let down by them.
I will try to contact a solicitor on Monday and hopefully I should speak to them if I can get an appointment.

And I do hope the police charge the garage for wasting time, as this seems so unfair..

Because it's reported to be a stolen vehicle. You knw that part about securing and preseving evidence?

What would you suggest they do had the vehicle been a stolen brand new and unregistered vehicle?

    Same rules apply.

So, garage A gives car to suss giezer 1 whom then, without paying for it, hands it on to suss giezer 2 who again parts with no cash. sg2 then sells the car to garage B and pockets the money. Garage B assumes all is right as they have got all the docs (and probably HPIed it too). They then sell-on to the customer.

6 weeks later, and rather miffed that they haven't got any cash for the car yet, garage A reports it nicked. They then decide not to press charges against sg1 so back-out.

Surely this means that the car is no longer listed as stolen?.

Should the new owner pay storage charges ?. No, it should be garage A (either volunteraly or through the OP taking them to Court). It was Garage A who reported the car stolen then retracted. The original report triggered the recovery and storage by the Police, so surely they are liable for the charges levied against the car for storage ?.
  • the OP should go down the police station with HPI report and all documents and ask to speek to the sarg in charge, the police should then arrange for the vehcle to be collected free of charge, and then have stern word with garage who made report, its upto the pound to ask garage A for the costs of storage from the garage in my opinion

Someone would be getting a seriously large bill for my costs and wasted time.
