Virgin broadband problem

Hi everyone,

Well, as briefly as I can:

We already had tv, phone and broadband with Virgin (at our old house), and moved house on Wednesday this week. Virgin came out and got us up and running the next day, which was great. Tv and phone work fine but I have a problem with the broadband. The modem links to the tower of my PC and I have a laptop that I use to connect to the internet wirelessly. Quite strangely, I am able to use the laptop and connet wirelessly, but I cannot connect the PC / tower (i.e. with the cable connection from the modem to the tower). Can't understand it at all, and the Virgin helpline didn't offer much assistance I must say!.
Problem is: my wife works from home and needs to have the internet available on the PC pronto, every hour is money down the drain .
Hope this all makes sense, and a massive thanks to anyone that tries to help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Duncan

Firstly - the most ridiculous question. Have you plugged it into the right socket on the PC?(There may be a socket for a dial up modem too). Also, is the plug all the way in to the socket at each end?

Have you tried the laptop on the end of the cable (in case there is a problem with the pc modem) and have you tried a different cable?

To ask the obvious is the ethernet port on your PC enabled?

It would be helpful to know whether you are using VM cable broadband or ADSL (via telephone line). Also which service tier you are on. Do you have a separate modem and router or are the two combined in a single device (superhub)?

    Hi Jane,

Pretty sure that I have it in the right socket (looks like there is only one anyway). The double computer icon appears, so it shows that there IS an internet connnection, but when you double click on the internet logo to go online it just sits for ages and then "page cannot be displayed". Just tried the laptop, but not sure if it was just working because of the wireless if you see what I mean!? Yes, tried a different cable too. Very confused, my wife is stressing me out!!!!

    Hi,

How do I check that? Could be that, sounds plausible...

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I am on VM Cable broadband, on medium service, I think. I used to have seperate modem before moving, but now it is a superhub. Could it be that then?

    Thanks,

    Duncan

Try turning off the wireless on the laptop, then connect the laptop to the hub using the same cable that the PC uses (i.e. take the cable out of the PC and plug it into the laptop). See what happens - does the laptop still connect to the internet?

    Hi all,

    Sorted!

Thanks for advice on this thread, thought I'd post that it was solved.
The PC was looking for the wrong IP address, and when I asked it to automatically look for one, it did and now works fine.

    So, pressure is off me!

    Thanks again,

    Duncan

In future, if you ever need to contact VM about the broadband not working, make sure you don't mention that your wife works from home as I'm sure that there will be something in their contract about commercial usage.
