Matching new speakers to current HiFi

Hi all..hoping someone can help me!
I have a Ministry of Sound CD player (got if free from freecycle) and it came with 2 large floorstanding speakers. The speakers were so bulky, that I gave them away and got a pair of smaller speakers to replace. (Now really regretting that I did this!).
I connected up my new smaller speakers..but i only get bass coming out of the (both) speakers..and hardly any treble.
I have also tried another set of speakers and this results in the same problem.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong...do I have to match up wattages or something?? (The manual for my HiFi does not give wattages tho!).
Thanks all!

You're sure the new speakers aren't faulty? You've tried them with something else to ensure that the tweeters work elsewhere? Even if this is your only system, can you try them with a friend's system?
Do the speakers have bi-wiring capability? i.e. separate terminals for treble and bass units? If so, how have you connected these to the amp? With two runs of cable? If you only have one run of cable, do you have biwiring links between the treble and bass terminals?
Do you have the maker's instructions for the new speakers?0
