I think you need to try and contact the third party and ask how they want to deal with the matter.

Few years ago someone hit my car and damaged the rear light, I told them I would repair it for £50, intended getting one from a scrap yard and fitting myself. Went round to their house the same night and her father gave me the money and thanked me for the polite and reasonable way I had dealt with the matter.

I for one would not be willing to let a third party get a mirror of ebay / scrapyard and fit it to my car themselves.

On the other side of the coin, Fleet Manager for a large mixed fleet, we frequently get asked if the third party can pay direct, unfortunately things have to go through the workshop / bodyshop and end up quiet costly

Thanks SteveJW yes just waiting for them to call as I had to leave them a note (parked car). I would like to ask if I can pay direct but obviously it's up to them, just wanted to be prepared when they call!
  • Agree with what everyone else is saying... Just one thing to add. When you pay them for the damage (assuming they do agree to this) write a small note along the lines of "payment of £100 from xxx to yyy for damage to VW polo wing mirror on dd/mm/yyyy. Both parties agree on figure to be final and no further claims to be made" both of you sign it and keep a copy each. You can add any other details you wish but this should prevent any further action.

Hopefully as you have been good enough to leave a note they will be decent enough to settle it this way.

I have to say that I agree with none of this post. Count yourself lucky that you didn't hit his car.

A little unfair. I am entitled to my opinion just like you.

Clearly you have never fallen foul of insurance companies in the way some have. It can happen that if you fail to notify your insurer & then someone decides they do want to claim from you after all & perhaps is more than you can afford & your insurer doesn't like your reason for not informing them of an accident (no matter how minor) as is required under the terms of the policy you agreed to when taking the policy out, then they can refuse to insure you when the policy is due for renewal.

I have seen it happen when I used to work for a large insurance company (I emphasise USED to ;)) & if you are refused insurance it can lead to a lot of problems trying to get cover.

All I am saying is don't just blindly refuse to inform your insurance company just because some people have had their premiums increased in similar circumstances. Just be aware of the facts & balance up whether you "need" to report it - every single road accident / bump / incident is different. As are every insurance company & their terms & conditions.

Everyone on this forum has an opinion on insurance & they all think they are right. Some people offer advice based on their experiences & some don't :D.

I hope you took a photo, to insure they don't escalate the whole thing to get every minor ding on the car fixed + injury claims and loss of earnings (you really have to be careful these days).

Unfortunately you are right. I'd like to believe that people were as honest as the OP and be grateful that she had the decency to leave her contact details.

As to looking on Ebay and scrapyards - I only suggested that so she had an idea of how much they would cost. I wasn't suggesting that she went and purchased and fitted it!!

Regarding insurance companies getting involved - I wouldn't have thought either side would want them to hear about it. Even if the "victim" was fully comp it is more than likely that they would have an excess.

I do have experience as the recipient of a hit and run driver who did exactly the same thing and obviously didn't leave a note.

It was on a P reg Escort and non electric. New prices were quite a lot, even grey repros. I scoured Ebay and found a guy breaking one locally, went round there and he was actually a mechanic and fitted it for me! Think it cost about £15.
