Please help re Samsung Galaxy Europa technical nightmare

I really hope someone can help me.
I have a samsung galaxy europa - I've not had it too long so am still figuring it out. It has (or had) a micros sd memory card fitted that had photo etc on it.
When I attached the phone to the laptop via the usb wire - a message would appear on the phone giving me two options usb or something called kies. When I clciked on usb - I could then see my phone as removable whatsit on my computer and could move music and pictures between the two.
Tonight I by mistake clicked kies - don't know what this is but I couldn't then see the phone on my comp. Each time I connected the usb before it gave me the option usb or kies. Since I clciked kies - the options no longer appear and I couldn't see anything on my comp
so my first problem was how to undo this so I could just use the usb as before? I don't know what kies is and I was quite satisfied using the usb
BUT now since this happened - I made things worse by fiddling - I think although don't think I pressed much and now when I try to view the pics I had in my files on my phone - it says there is no sd card - although there is.
I have some pictures on my phone that I would be gutted to have lost which is why I was trying to transfer them in the first place but most of all I just want the phone to work they way it.
Could anybody please help me? I would be really grateful

Hi there,
Kies is a samsung software bundle that amongst other things allows you to sync your computer to your phone in both wired and wireless.
Simply clicking on 'KIES' should not result in your data being erased but instead is likely to just mean that your phone will always use the KIES software from now on until otherwise.
Alternatively you may have done something else to format your SD card.
My advice at this point would be to make sure your phone is disconnected from your computer. Retstart your PC.
Providing you haven't modoified your phone it should be running on Android 2.1. Turn off your phone, remove your SD card, give it a blow and put it back in making sure it is in snuggly.
Turn the phone back on. Once the phone settles it should mount the SD card itself. If not go to Settings>> Storage>> and take a look at what it says there.
If it gives you the option to 'Unmount' then it recognises the card. If it gives you the option to 'Mount' then tap on this and it will mount the card.
Now, if your Apps drawer look for an application called File or Filer or File Manager. (Varies by operator)
If you don't have anything like this then download a free file manager from the android market. Once this is installed open it so you can explore your SD card via your phone. You can then check if your missing files are hiding in there.0 -
Hi Thanks so much for that you're an absolute star!
It is now recognising the sd card and the pictures are still there so I am soooo grateful to you. When I plug the usb into phone and laptop - it says it's installing device driver software - but half an hour later and it's still saying it! I don't remember it doing that originally - it just saw it as a removable drive and gave me the option to copy or view etc - so not sure what's going on with that. However as I have the pictures back anything else is a bonus - just need to get them off phone somehow.
Thankyou again for your help - I really appreciate it. x0 -

Have you installed the Samsung software? It probably came on a CD with the phone. Or you can downlaod it from here. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

Hi Thankyou
No CD came with phone. I simply plugged into the laptop and like a camera or pen drive the phone showed up in the my computer part and I could see what was on there.
I had a look at the link you posted and that has the kies thing? It was touching that made everything go wrong last night. So I'm a bit nervous of doing that. I would be quite happy to just use the usb wire but it's still saying installing device drivers and searching preconfigured driver folders - whatever that means!!!

Install Kies ,close it from taskbar .
Connect the phone in USB Mass storage mode and let PC find USB drivers .
Kies is the Samsung software for various tasks and firmware updates backup contacts etc .

I've installed kies (on to laptop) but when I connect the phone to the laptop - it says it is looking for drivers but that's all it does - look nothing happens no matter how long I leave it. previously when I connected the phone to the laptop - the option of kies or usb came up - now that doesn't happen.0

Remember when you connect you phone to the laptop to take a look at your phone's notifcation bar at the top of the handset. Drag that down with your finger and tap to activate USB mode. Image below...0
