Cookworks slow cooker

I have bought my OH a cookworks slow cooker for Christmas (ah the romance of it!) but a quick look at the recipe book before I wrapped it seemed to indicate that everything had to be cooked to boiling before being put in.Did I understand it correctly because it would seem to go against the main reason for a slow cooker which is to chuck everything in of a morning and come home to a nice hot meal. Have I got it wrong or have I bought something which will spend most of its life in the back of a cupboard?

I have a cookworks slow cooker, i put all the ingredients in raw and then any water i add is boiling. guess its because it takes so long for it to get up to heat from cold?

you can brown meat/ onions/ whatever first but you don't HAVE to. so in morning if you chucked in a load of veg etc poured on boiling water and turned on you'd have the mix for a nice soup at the end of the day

I've got cookworks and I chuck it in and go! It says alot of stuff should be room temp as it takes longer to cook, I'm not fussed as I know I'll be away over 8 hours so out the fridge mine comes!

Just cooked a piece of gammon on low heat overnight straight from fridge. Beautiful and tender this morning - just picked it up, and it fell apart.:o
  • Hi - I tend to grill lamb chops before slow cooking, firstly to brown them off and secondly because it gets rid of a lot of fat, then throw in slow cooker with hot gravy and leave for the day. They fall apart they are so tender. By putting the liquid in hot, as CoD says, it then doesn't have to heat that up first.

Sometimes I prepare a casserole in the evening, chill overnight and cook from chilled in the morning. I add 2hours to the cooking time if it is chilled compared to ambient temp.
