How do I work out which is the cheapest way?
To work out what you would have paid on standard tarrif add together your day and night units and multiply by your suppliers regular day rate and add 5% vat and compare to what you have been charged on econ7 day/night rates. HTH
If you have a WM, DW and TD and run them on off peak only making Econ7 pay is not that difficult IMO. I do not have storage heating but can keep my off peak uage at 40-60% without too much trouble. In the summer I turn the gass off and use the immersion for heating water and swith chte gass account to a non-standing charge tarrif and then swith it back when the winter month arrive and I crank the boiler up again. LOLLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -

Helen,
There is no way for us to work out which is the cheapest solution for you as we don't know your postcode or current supplier and most importantly how much electricity you use in the 7 hour E7 period and how much at daytime rates.
To give you an example - assuming Widnes is in the Manweb area - for BG standard rates.
For E7 you will pay 27.828pence/kWh for the first 900kWh per year and then 13.274p/kWh for daytime and 2.783p/kWh for E7
For normal you pay 19.996p/kWh for the first 900kWh per year then 10.880p/kWh.
All above prices include VAT.
Taking an example where you are on an E7 tariff and use 1000kWh on E7 and 3000kWh on daytime rates(ie 25% on E7 of a 4000kWh total)
You will pay (900 x 27.828p) + (2,100 x 13.274p) + (1,000 x 2.783p) which if my arithmetic is correct is £557.50
On a normal tariff you pay (900 x 19.996p) + (3100 x 10.880p) which is a total of £517.24
So on the example above you would be £40pa out of pocket on an E7 tariff.
You will need to see what your consumption is on normal and E7 timings and look at various companies for their rates in your area to work out if it is better for you to be on an E7 tariff and which company is the cheapest.0 -
Thanks for the relpys Thanks Cardew I will start to read my meter and find what I use0

Using Equipower via ebico, the charges for manweb (including VAT) are: full rate 12.85 pence per kWh (flat rate) and cheap rate 3.95 pence per kWh. No standing charge.
http://www.ebico.co.uk/en/open/pages/powertariffsen.php
You can see how the charges vary acc. to supplier.
I suppose you could put you annual readings, divided into, say 55% dear rate and the rest cheap rate, into a power comparison program (they're all near the top of this page!) and look at the cheapest E7 tarrif, then put the 100% into a normal tariff and compare the two to see what the saving would be."Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0 -

Well as most laptops consume about 25 watts, they cost roughly 1 pence for 4 hours use on daytime electricity rates.
So, assuming E7 rates are about one third of daytime rates, if you use your laptop for the full 7 hours at night you will have saved just over 1 pence!
The advantage being you would be able to listen through the night to the English cricket team being hammered by Australia.0
