Can companies "steal" your money

I recently (last month) signed up to sky when i signed up they asked for a months subscription in advance via a debit/credit card neither of which i have so they said they would bill me for it and i could pay by cheque. In the meantime my dd details came through paying out on the first of the month which was only a few days later having not heard from sky re the advance payment i assumed the first dd covered it. However i have gone to the bank today to find that sky have requested another payment yesterday which the bank refused charging me £38 for which took me overdrwn leading to another dd not being paid so another charge of £38 was made. My question is can sky just take money out of my account without informing me want to get my facts straight before i phone them Thank you

I'm not sure on this but if they had billed you for it then yes,
But did you agree to it on the phone?

Just call them and ask them to clarify exactly what the two Direct Debits where for.

If they are legitimate, then inform Sky that because you were not made aware that the second payment would be taken, you have now been charged by your bank.

Sky should refund you your bank charges hopefully.
