Item damaged in transit from America to UK. Who do I claim from?

Wasn't sure which part of the forum to put this in, so I'll try here.
I bought an item off eBay.com about two weeks ago. Seller didn't ship to the UK so I arranged for a friend to take delivery in the US. It arrived with him in good condition and he sent it on to me here in the UK. It arrived today, but it's broken. It's a 9" statue and one of the leg's is broken in two places.
So the question is, who do I need to claim from? Obviously not the eBay seller as he's fulfilled his part of the transaction. So is it USPS or Royal Mail? Royal Mail's wording is really difficult to understand as they say you can't claim if the item was sent via a different carrier. It then goes on to say that you can claim for items sent from abroad but it'll take them up to 90 days to investigate as they need to contact their international partners!
I'd rather not have to get my friend to claim from USPS as he was doing me a favour and I don't want to put him to any more trouble. So I want to do all the claiming.
Apparently USPS will accept claims for damaged items coming into the US; you just have to take the item to your your nearest PO and they'll do the rest. Why isn't the UK so simple?! :mad:
Anyway, anyone have any ideas?

You have no contract with USPS or Royal Mail. Your friend is the one who has and they will be the one who will have to claim.0

You might be able to claim from USPS (depending on the service that was used), but to do this you will need a claims form, original posting receipt and proof of value.
If would be far easier if this was all done by your friend back in the USA.
