Well, in all fairness, what did you expect the two chinese blokes to do. You'd already rang the police. Not all chinese blokes are Jackie Chan in disguise you know. ;)

Agreed, LOL, they're not going to run after a couple of scums are they? Who would be stupid enough to do that? in todays world without being really confident of your self defence abilities. Stupid Merc driver should not have left whatever it was on the front seat.

To the OP, I'm just trying to wonder how these guys knew your house was empty, they must have staked it out? or do they just force doors and hope there's no one in? Surely not.

You hit the nail on the head. How many times do we have to be told not to leave anything on show in our cars? When I walk through town, I find it unbelievable what people leave in their cars. OK, I accept that someone would smash the window just for the hell of it, but if there's nothing to pinch, they'll go on to the next car. Also, with regard to house alarms, to me they're a waste of time. How many times do you hear them going off and how many times do you you see anyone doing anything about it?

You are very unlikely to get a PC to visit you if you have had a theft from your car. It is not that they don't care, it's just that it will be a waste of time. The PC will only take down the same details you gave to the people over the phone. You may feel a little better thinking that you have had a visit and therfore are special and an individual will be personally dealing with your case, but it's not like that anymore.

Car crime and even burglary is now treated as volume crime. It is all recorded and will be investigated. But it will not attract the funding to say swab your car for DNA evidence or even fingerprints, because it's too expensive and will probably not get a conviction anyway. So unless there is any obvious suspect and evidence to prove that..... it will be filed away.

The new Police Community Support Officers, will soon be seen on the streets and give a better visible Police presence, but to be honest it mught make the public feel better, but it won't stop people breaking in to stuff.

Be assured there are Police teams dealing with volume crime issues, but it won't stop it happening over night. You lock the burglar away, but the punishment is so pathetic he's back out in less than 4 months.

BEST ADVICE: INSURE EVERYTHING NEW FOR OLD.
ALWAYS LOCK SENTIMENTAL VALUABLES IN A SAFE
NEVER LEAVE VALUABLE ITEMS ON SHOW.

  • I live in Cardiff and may be tempting fate but have not yet had a problem. however, if you want to get involved in your neighbourhood, why not seek out your local PACT (Police and Community Together) meeting. At each meeting the police agree 3 priorities for the nxt month, at least thats what happens in Splott! I have noticed an increase in visible policing!

    Hope this helps!

I confronted a bloke who had just smashed a car window in the Roath area a little while ago. However, when he pulled a large screwdriver out of his trousers and waved it at me I decided the best thing to do was to back off and call the police.

I live near Roath Park and thankfully have had very few problems. Some neighbours have had break ins but it's not common.

Our Police have been using " Covert capture cars" They are fitted with CCTV and silent alarms. They leave a knackered laptop and broken stereo in it and park it in a crime area. The stupid thives break in, get caught on CCTV and then are nicked as the cops are around the corner waiting for the alarm to go off.
