Quote for sorting out my dodgy electrics - opinions please!

Have been trying to get quotes for sorting out the electrics in my 60's semi and have had the usual probs with 1 man bands round here not getting back to me so got a quote off a bigger firm.

The cooker is wired in wrong in my kitchen with no proper socket and there is an old fashioned fuse box but I don't know much about this sort of thing. They have quoted £650+ vat to

install new split load consumer unit
Upgrade earthing to gas/water mains & cross bond pipework
install new cooker panel & oulet & new twin socket outlet
carry out full test

Can anyone give their opinion on whether that's about right?

  • The price sounds about right, presuming the Part P paperwork is included in the price.

Use a company from the competent persons register.

Or if you are in Scotland (no part P)

    Hope this helps.

ps it may be useful to ask around for a small local firm, who can come round and have a look (i usually give a free visual check- no tools), which can usually tell quite a lot.
    baldly going on...

Does part p paperwork usually cost extra?

Have had 1 small firm I've used before come round to quote in Nov but never got a quote and can't get hold of them ever. Had to assume they didn't want the job but would have been nice of them to tell me!

Have rung so many electricians but they never get back to me which is why I changed tack and went for somewhere bigger with people who actually answer the phone!

Thanks for your advice - it's much appreciated.
