Cottage flats - 4 in a block type - queries

Options
Desparately looking for somewhere to buy (Glasgow) and there are literally thousands of these in my area and are the ones which are in my price range. So wondered about upper or lower - would be interested to hear from anyone who has lived in either. Would you say lower is much better (this is my gut feeling) - with back door and, by the looks of things, bigger garden area in most cases? Or upper then you don't get noise from above and maybe feel a bit more secure and you sometimes get an attic?
Also for those familiar with the shared drying area - would it be possible to fence off "your half" and have a bigger private garden area - has anyone done this after approaching the upstairs/downstairs neighbour?
If you have an upstairs one do you find it's a pest getting furniture in/out, and what if I break my leg or something :D Also have a small(ish) child so am thinking kids running up and down stairs to get in and out is not such a good thing?
Would really like to hear experiences of anyone familiar with these.

I used to live in a 4 in a block in Edinburgh on the ground floor. The insulation from noise was horrendous. I was lucky that a new person had just moved in upstairs so we both found the problem quickly. We insulated our ceilings and the noise disappeared as well as making their house a lot colder.lol. We both paid 50% costs.

Many neighbours fell out due to the same problem. We found although the insulation was good when the houses were built it was now like a piece of paper.

In the end I liked being downstairs with access to my garden. Many people also put in patio doors so they did not have to walk round the corner.

Regarding the garden again because we had both just bought we got our solicitors to change the deeds to show the drying area inbetween both gardens could now be aquired into each of our gardens which was much better.

you would also need to check that they are all bought in your block, that would make life easier as well as not having to deal with council charges for repairs which do occur from time to time

i would definately get a survey done as some of the properties i looked at before i bought had needed to be pinned and had damp issues

i wouldnt buy one again, i think you get more space and noise insulation, thicker walls built with tenement apartments, converted townhouse numbers
