Hi
I have a lloyds tsb current account with a direct debibut i am currently having problems with it.
One direct debit i have is suppose to be debited on the 29th but some months it comes out on 21st like today! and others on the 29th.
My question is is it the Banks fault or the company i'm paying the direct debit to?
Also should they be able to change it to make sure it is debited on the same date each time?
Thanks
James

The banks pay when requested - there is no regular date generally.
Normally direct debits are paid "on or after" a certain date.
Contact who is charging the direct debit and find out what their policy is and whether you have agreed to them moving the date or not.0 -
I have a direct debit prob need some advice not sure if right place to ask but here goes i signed up to sky last month and arranged to pay by direct debit coming out on the first of every month when i signed up they said i needed to pay a months subscription upfront with a debit of credit card neither of which i have so they said they would bill me for it and i could send a cheque. Which they never did but as my dd was due a few days later didn't worry about it. however been to bank today to find i am overdrawn (unauthorised) because they requested my payment again without telling me can they do this. i have been charged £38 for the dd refusal and because of that charge another dd was refused which meant i have been charged another £38. thank youI don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0

There will be some variance in dates for DDs due to weekends and bank holidays as well as financial institution delays but 21st to 29th is pushing it a bit, it is most likely the system of whoever is requesting the DD from the bank.
I am guessing this is a problem as 21st to 29th is before and after paydates, most companies will allow you to reschedule DD dates to a different time of the month so you could ask them to shift to the 1st week in the month.
I have found similar problems in the past when regularly moving large sums from one bank to the next ready for a regular withdrawal, once you have taken all possibilities into account, including christmas you end up with your money in limbo for up to 10 days, during which they are keeping your interest.
Still the banks have been promising reduced interbank transfer delays for some years now, maybe they might actually do something this century now that the electronic age is upon us. Not likely, cards and stacked springs to mind.0 -
with a standing order, you tell the bank when to pay it. If its a weekend or bank holiday, it goes out after that date.
with a direct debit, the company takes the money from your bank account. The bank has no control of that apart from making sure a mandate exists to allow it. If its a weekend or bank holiday, it goes out after that date.
Never should they take out before the date agreed in the payment schedule.

Not the bank. Also should they be able to change it to make sure it is debited on the same date each time?
No. The bank has no control over the date. Unless the payment is 4 weekly, the date should be the same each month unless weekends or bank holidays.
There are also debit card recurring payments as well and these have no real protection or rules as are in place with direct debits. Many people mix these up thinking they are direct debits when they are not.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
