Electric meter

ill try and keep simple.

we moved into a brand new build over a year ago now, we pay are electric every month by direct debit.

when we moved it the account was already created and was in the name of the housing association, where we then transfer the account into our name.

the meter number was allocated with the property and bill.

so off we go, start paying for bills etc, after a while we went into credit on electric by couple pound, well last week i got bill for electric and was £98 in credit, so i thought ok ill ask for this back, so i called up, the lady wanted to make sure i got right amount back so asked for meter readings as last were estimated, so wanted actual readings.

i passed them on and she said ok we actually owe you £150.44 and we have over charged you, but it came to light for some reason i was only using half a unit of electric per day, and normally a fridge freezer uses this alone.

she asked for engineer to come out to replace meter as she thinks it maybe playing up.
i have checked again and meter number matchs the meter in the room,

we live in flats 9 in total

no meters are numbered to houses just meter numbers to the house.

well electrican came out today to do electrical check on my property ( not electric company guy ) he turned the main elec switch off, he came in and it hadnt done anything, he looked again the meter isnt even mine its someone elses.
the meter thats allocated to my property isnt even mine, someone has my meter and pays my bill and i pay theres.

my question is, they will come out tomoz to change meter over and will prob find the meters are wrong.
will i get billed the difference or will it start again, the electrican today said its the electric company's responsibility to ensure my bills are correct and are from the correct meter, and that i have paid the bill provided to me by the supplier.

will they just give me money back in refund and start again or will they chase me for not paying enough.

need to know asap where i stand.

should i also take meter reading from the meter that im currently paying before they remove.

From a legal view you will have to pay for the electricity you used but the company will give you time to do this, if they don't ask, plus they may write the debt of as it wasn't your fault.

i was told this isnt my fault in anyway, and is down to them, they fitted meters, and sorted them out to each property before i even moved in, it is there fault they have charged me for someone else,s meter.

surely they would have to write it all off and just start again
  • Same happened in our flat with gas a couple of years back.

They refunded everyone (for 3 years worth) and started again.

Not sure legally whether it was right or not but you may get lucky.

To answer the question, YES take the meter readings.

Take a photo of it too, with something dated in the shot.

    right update:

i took pictures of meter, the meter also has a date and time function so took pics of it all.

the engineers came out today to change meter, they checked everything on there paperwork and meter, also turned my electric off and changed it,

they changed the meter which i believe was someone else, they said thats it your meters changed, they even signed the sticker which has been put above meter.
they even wrote the house number on meter aswell so easier to find next time.

so now what do i do.
