I am furious. I had cancelled a gym membership this week and was advised to contact my bank to cancel the Direct Debit payment of £35.99 - So I went to my local Co-op bank on Tuesday and spoke with the advisor and said please cancel the Direct Debit and and future payments. He said don't worry sir, I have done it and there's no way that money can now leave your account.
So guess what?
The money left my account today!
Is this the bank incompetence?
I will be marching in to the bank tomorrow to demand an immediate refund!
I now have no food money for the weekend!

Ah yes - just found this "If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by (insert your organisation name) or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society."
The thing is I was there when he clicked the buttons and said it's all done sir. It worries me how it could happen, leaving me penniless!0 -

So you cancelled Tuesday, today's Thursday - likely it was already being processed as the previous poster said. No doubt you should have been told there was a risk of the DD going through.
Not really the fault of the guy in the bank that you have to cancel your gym subs to eat though. Am sure they will reverse the payment if you call telephone banking.0 -
Check your account in the morning, I bank with Co-op and when you cancel a DD close to the due date and its already in process it shows in your account and then reverses overnight.
Most likely you will find it has all sorted itself out without you needing to do any more. It's to do with them receiving the request and their systems automatically rejecting it but the display doesn't correct itself until an overnight run.0 -

Let me tell you what i think, Your contract is not cancelled, and you dont want to pay so you thought oh i will cancel the direct debt so they cant get money.
So marching into the bank will be no good, Unless your going to fill indemnity form in.0 -

I hate it when people get all judgmental. Besides your comment is irrelevant.
The reasons for canceling a direct debit don't matter. If it's been canceled, then the bank should immediately reimburse you. If it was in the middle of being processed, they should have explained this to you, so they should still reimburse you.
Same thing happened to me with Santander (and I'd cancelled 3 weeks prior). I had to phone them twice and quote the DD guarantee at them before they'd reimburse it, which they finally did.0 -
