A visa debit card will work. Just select visa from the list it will work.

When you use your UK debit card outside the UK it is processed like a credit card anyway.
Also note, it's $14 per person for an ESTA.

Bear in mind that if you don't have a credit card, US immigration may ask how you intend to pay for your stay. A debit card would be fine as proof here.

If you are staying at a hotel - they will ask for a credit card. If you hire a car, they will ask for a credit card. I would never use a debit card in the US as the security arrangements are terrible e.g. no chip and pin. When you sign the slip - they don't bother to look at your signature. As long as their terminal gives them an authorisation code - they don't care who the card holder is.

As such, I wouldn't want to expose my current account to anyone - hence a credit card.

Thank you all for your replies, now I know what I must do.

I didn't know about the Debit card being used as a credit card...but as above no doubt a CC will be asked for at some time over there

$14 each is a bit much when a piece of white card used to suffice

Your mileage might vary, as they say, but I have never been asked anything at US immigration beyond purpose of travel and how long I would be staying.
