can N Power do this?

I moved in with my partner and we are with N Power.

he is the main account holder.

He adds my name (literally just my name) to the account so that I can speak to them while he is at work.

I have an old account with N power which i was paying off at an agreed rate at £15 per month via scotcall (debt collection agency) on direct debit.

Suddenly the direct debit gets cancelled and my partner gets a new bill with my debt added on it (we are not married) and they are now demanding £350 a month off us to cover debt and usage

My partner has complained as since the energy I used was irrelevant to him at the time he doesnt see why he should be liable. He has written a complaint and thier response has been simply that they are following a policy of moving bills from old properties onto the new property.

We complained back arguing that he never lived there and as the main account holder surely he is not laible for this nor is it relevant. We have offered to continue paying the £15 a month on top of our useage but they have refused.

We are not sure where we stand legally on this. Any advice?

No such thing as( He adds my name (literally just my name) to the account so that I can speak to them while he is at work)
When you become joint account holders you both become jointly and severally liable for all bills due.

He is no longer the 'main account holder', you now have a joint account (you dont have to be married) and NPower will have updated the address of your old debt laden account. Having done this they have now merge the 2 accounts into one.

The following information (if you want to post it) would help in determing if the new DD level is reasonable:

    1) Is the increase solely as a result of your debt or is it a combination useage and debt?
    2) What was the DD before the increase?
    3) How much is your debt?
    4) What rate were you paying your debt off at?
